Buddha Art
By Saskia Vervoort
I'd like to share the recent project of my husband Christian Lohman with you whom I'm very proud of. Christian has always seen the world through the eyes of an artist; his intrinsic artistic vision and perceptions were channeled into a career in photography and at a young age he quickly became one of Holland’s most prominent and influential photographers, shooting major fashion, product and most commonly, dramatic car advertising campaigns. This career was inevitably accompanied by a glamorous, hedonistic lifestyle with worldwide travel, yet throughout this time and possibly providing a necessary balance, Christian developed a deep, enduring fascination and respect for a completely different culture; Buddhism; it’s teachings, wisdom, symbolism and beauty. He countered the crazy world of advertising photography with regular trips to Asia, exploring remote corners of Thailand, Sri Lanka and Laos on motorbike; visiting and photographing the temples and iconography of the Buddhist culture. On these trips he met and shared ideas with many other travelers as well as local people, enjoying their gentle curiosity, openness and friendship, while being humbled by their hospitality and friendship. Now living in Southern Spain, surrounded by stunning and inspiring Andalucian countryside, Christian has been developing a new outlet for his artistic expression which encompasses both his photographic expertise and his passion and respect for Buddhist culture. His new art works are produced combining and layering his photos of Buddha statues, Buddhist Pali text and other Buddhist elements, each work of art expressing a Buddhist thought or emotion. This “layering” technique gives a depth and fluidity to the art which in turn complements the subject. The resulting images are somehow both simple yet complex, and each viewing seems to reveal a new relevant detail or thought provoking sentiment. Buddhism is a way of living and is founded on wisdom. It encourages free thinking and to question rather than to blindly accept common thought. The purpose of life is to develop empathy for all living beings without prejudice and to work for their good, happiness, and peace.

Well, I'm a Christian myself, but there's no question about how great Buddhist art is. Not to mention that both Europe and Asia are so rich in art and history. Your husband has a great eye. I like the one with the candles - was that done with a mirror?

Hi James, Thanks for you comment. All the artwork are compositions of photo's that Christian has made during his travels in Asia. The one with the candles are photos made in temples in Luang Prabang, a beautiful city on the Mekong river in Laos. No mirror was used. All the best, Saskia
Great intel, Saskia. As I am a self-taught artist, I really appreciate Art from all walks of life. Thank you for sharing and for the great images. Best wishes. Frederick
Great works catch the eye indeed. Thank you for the sharing. I'm not the Buddhist, yet I bow to wisdom they claim, respect a way of living not on fruits of the lips but the being in the concrete. However, THAT should describe any faith. I think the artists from all religions (not only Buddhists) would be proud to sign below your definition of Life purpose. Thank you for so inspiring verses.
